What your moisturiser label isn’t telling you

A few months ago, I picked up a moisturiser while shopping with ‘ceramides’ in bold letters across the front.
I was pleased with myself. I’d done my research, I knew ceramides mattered, and here was a jar that had them.
Three weeks in, my skin wasn’t doing much better than before. Tight, still a bit dull, still that dry, papery feeling by evening.
It wasn't until I compared the ingredients list to my old CeraQuin moisturiser that I understood why. My new jar had one ceramide. CeraQuin has five. And it turns out that difference matters a lot more than the word ‘ceramide’ on the front of the packaging suggests.
What ‘contains ceramides’ actually means
Ceramides has become one of those skincare words that sells a product on its own. It sounds specific and scientific, so we assume it means the formula has done the work.
But ceramide isn’t one ingredient. It’s a family of lipids, and there are at least nine types found naturally in human skin, each doing a slightly different structural job.
A product can legitimately claim to ‘contain ceramides’ with just one of them in the formula, in a small amount, and still put the word front and centre.

Why one ceramide isn’t always enough
